Parliamentary Breakfast – 7th March 2023
In March Head and Neck Cancer Australia headed to Parliament House, Canberra, the first Parliamentary Breakfast – hosted by Deborah O’Neill, Senator Michaelia Cash, and Kylea Tink for North Sydney, Co-Chairs of the Parliamentary Friends of Cancer Care and Cure Group.
The breakfast cancelled twice due to Covid, was dedicated to Hayley Eldridge a #headandneckcancer patient from Melbourne. The presentation focussed on educating attendees on the issues facing head and neck cancer patients, and obtaining funding to assist with the education and support of cancer sufferers, their families, and their carers.
The presentation was delivered by HANCA CEO, Nadia Rosin, supported by a panel consisting of Mike George, Lora Winter (via video), Graeme Lewsey, and Usha Salagame. Although Lora couldn’t be there in person, her speech is really worth a watch as she explains why she, as a young woman with no previous health issues, is representative of “the changing face of Head and Neck Cancer”.
The response from the Breakfast has been overwhelming with everyone incredibly grateful for the support and empathy showed to them by the Members of Parliament and Government Department representatives who attended and to have their voices heard. #HANCA also had some very productive meetings with MPs following the breakfast to reinforce the unique needs of people living with Head and Neck Cancer and the need for dedicated funding!
The breakfast was also an opportunity to also launch two Australian Government funded projects: the GP and Dentist Online Education Module and our What to Expect Next (When Newly Diagnosed with Head and Neck Cancer).
